Statue of Lenoidas at Thermopylae. This was the battle site where 300 Spartans held off 10,000 Persians. Even though they lost the battle, they were able to hold off the Persians long enough to allow the other Greek City-States long enough to mobilize their defenses and resulted in a moral victory for the Greeks.

Santorini - Archeological site of Akrotiri. Along with The Acropolis and The Knossos this was the other site I was very excited to visit. It is thought to have been a significant Minoan Settlement. The Minoan's were the first advanced civilization in Europe and were based in Crete. Their civilization ended around 1400 BC with invasions by the Mycenaean Greeks and effects from the eruptions of the Thera volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC.
